We have specifically designed the wooden stool project to incorporate as many machines as possible within the available timeframe. While some joints can be cut by hand, it’s important to know when it’s better to use hand-cut joints versus machines.

What’s Covered During the Week:
- Overview of the project design and brief
- Drawing your project – by hand or using computer-aided design (CAD)
- Creating jigs and templates
- Timber technology basics and marking out timber
Machines we will use – bandsaw, table saw, planer/thicknesser, spindle moulder, CNC router, and Domino machine
Given the project’s complexity, some parts have been pre-machined to save time. You’ll machine one leg from start to finish, one cross rail, and glue up a complete stool top. See day planner below for more information on the steps.
Course Schedule:
Monday
- Safety talk and look around the workshop
- The brief and making process
- Stool design
- Understanding rod drawings
- CAD and Fusion360
- Jig making
- Timber technology
- Marking out timber
Tuesday
- Cutting up timber on the bandsaw
- Planing and thicknessing timber on the planer machine
- Using the spindle molder machine for the legs
- Using a jig on the table saw to cut the legs to size
- Cutting cross rails to size
- Cutting cross rail, halving joint on table saw jig
- Gluing wood together to make up the stool top
Wednesday
- CNC the tops
- Using the domino machine on the legs
- Tapering the legs using the spindle molder machine
- Fitting cross halving joints together
Thursday
- Dry-clamping stool legs and rails together
- Gluing rails and legs together
- Sanding top of stool
Friday
- Sanding
- Fitting top of stool
- Applying oil finish
