Mobius light

Having spent the last 30+ years working as an architect, I was keen to branch out into both designing and making things. I looked around for a suitable course and Marc Fish’s studio at robinson house was the clear choice. The combination of traditional skills and experimental design-based making was just what I was looking for, so I signed up for a 24 week course, having previously done a one week taster.

I learned a huge amount, on all sorts of topics, from how to work safely and accurately, to selecting timber and other materials, adhesives, abrasives and finishing. I particularly enjoyed learning to create laminated forms.

The teaching is rigorous, but encouraging. You have the chance to explore your own ideas, which are challenged in a positive way. You are left in no doubt if your idea won’t work, but alternatives will be suggested.

My only subsequent regret was not taking on a longer course! The time flew by and I think I can safely say I enjoyed every minute.
